Once again a very busy season for Cornwall Area, a number of RBL events were attended, the first being the Veterans Awareness
Event at St Ives organised by Martin. Others included the Perranporth Veterans Parade, 19th July where Roger provided his jeep to
transport Lady Mary to the Inner Green for the service escorted by three motorcycles. The RBL Veterans day at Liskeard, 3rd
August was supported although the wet weather curtailed activities.
A Cornwall contingent supported the National MVT show, at Kemble Airfield on the 27th - 29th June with 1952 Austin Champ GS
owner Bill Bock, 1969 Land rover Air Portable owner Roger Lambshead. 1971 Land rover 4x4 2a Ambulance. owners Tim and
Sharon Minihane. Despite some very wet & windy conditions, turning the Minihanes 12x12 into a stunt kite, testing the storm
lashings, the tent held firm, which was lucky as it was our dining shelter and accommodation The journey of several hundred miles
was worth the effort, we were made to feel very welcome. Thanks to the Champ camp for helping with flying tents & Paula for
cooking. Hundreds of vehicles were on display as well as the magnificent Oshkosh HET.
Buckfastleigh MV Show 12th - 13th July, Cornwall members supported this event with 5 land rovers and a Bedford MW which
made its first appearance in Devon, 12 mvt members helped to erect the tents, including the Minihanes new luxury bathroom. Bill
Bock brought along his brand new Field Kitchen, which was immaculate as we didn't get to use it! Unfortunately on the road run
Ron Cave's land rover became a little poorly and recovered by AA tow truck, requiring a water pump. Despite the weather everyone
enjoyed the event, making the most of the Trains and superb Dartmoor views.
Also on 13th July Tamar Historic Transport Club held it's Festival of Transport at the Duchy College Stoke Climsland. Enjoying
this event were Graham and Carol with a Austin Champ and a 2A Land rover ambulance affectionately referred to as “Alvis”.
George and Vyvyan with their lightweights, Bob a Chevrolet MUW truck and jeeps from Bill and Rosalie also Malcom from
Crediton. A little known event in an excellent location.
We now have the prime position around the very big oak tree in the top of the field at Liskeard Steam Fair, Boconnoc, this year
held 18th - 20th July in excellent weather. Vehicles on display were Green Goddess, Land rover series 2A Ambulance, series 3GS, a
109 24v FFR, two LTWT's and a jeep. Sharon and Tim set up their 80's Field Dressing Station next to their Land rovers, the
whole area being covered with a very large scrim net and combined with the tree it was really impressive.
On the 23rd -25th August Cornwall held their MVT 40th anniversary celebrations at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, 865 acres of
spectacular coastal scenery and countryside. The event was well supported, the West Midlands Group came with a good show of
large vehicles, also an Austin Champ display from Warminster, and 155 Howitzer from St Cleer in addition to our own members.
Military displays and stalls also complemented the event. Bill took us on new road runs this year, at one point a comment was heard
“we can't get up there”, the convoy did and throughly enjoyed the trip. After a tour of the Deer Park, then Cawsand Bay, returned
via Millbrook lake, excellent runs.
Our naffi served the meals during the weekend in spite of heavy rain during the early hours of Sunday morning which deposited
more water on the naffi and tents than was in the Tamar. Well done to the hard working staff who still carried on regardless.
Cornwall provided entertainment for the whole weekend, Dicky Lines performed during the day, if you didn't know “Mr Goo”
when you arrived, you certainly did when you left! A very pleasant Sarah sang for us on Saturday evening, while on Sunday a
bemused Al Diamond, a welsh operatic singer by nature, produced a suburb evening of entertainment. Kay's dog, a boxer named
Max took an excited interest when Al produced a large glove puppet in the form of a monkey. The singer kept a nervous eye on
Max, after all it was his arm inside the monkey. Thank you Bill, Ian and all the hard working staff, quoting an email, “what ever
you're doing, keep on doing it”, you all did Cornwall proud.
Sharon and Tim Minihane attended The Great Dorset Steam Fair 27th - 31st August when it celebrated the 40th MVT anniversary
displaying their Field Hospital with 1940's memorabilia which included Hits from Home Front, weapons, British and American
Soldiers personal kits and webbing. Congratulations to Sharon and Tim on winning the trophy for first prize in the collectors section.
The Devon Military Show at Okehampton Army Camp on the 13th -14th September enjoyed a sunny weekend. Sheila & Steve
were there with the GMC, Tim, Vyvyan, George and new member Ian Barnes & friend all with Land rover lightweights from
Cornwall. The road runs across the moor were enjoyed with plenty of water in the fords. The run on Saturday encountered a
military exercise, firing blanks! with plenty of smoke, which required our retreat.
