March 2008
CMVT
This has been a quiet period for the club, a venture on the 16th February with help and support from members of the CMVT,
moving an aircraft, a Fairy Gannet by road from Helson to Davidstow, created a lot of interest, with photographers in great
numbers. A crane, two low loaders and a car trailer being employed to relocate XG831 to its new home.
Our club meeting on the 20 February was entertained by Sgt Mike Lyne (retired), a true Cornishman with a fascinating wartime
story to tell. In 1943, Mike initially served in the National Fire Service in Bodmin and at the age of 16 attended many plane
crashes and bombing of the local airfields. His recollections of the attacks on St Eval, the main fighter station in Cornwall were
quite hair raising. Mike joined the Army and served in the Royal Tank Regiment January 1945 – 1948, when undertaking bulldozer
duties was sent to Belsen. His brief account of duties there were told to a hushed room before moving on to other stories. After
demob, Mike was called up again from reserve for Korea, where his intriguing tank stories kept the room interested.
Frank Volante and Mike Lyne both did there tank training at Catterick, exchanging experiences from that time. Frank told us of the
time served the Royal Tank Regiment in 1950 in the 7th Tanks and the C squadron in Korea, training on Centurions, and
transferring to the Motor Mechanics.
Mike informed us that he has made a recording for The National War Museum London, the feature being open this year.
21st - 24th March, a convoy was formed to take Henry to the Henry Matthews Easter Crank Up. Unfortunately the weather was
not very kind to this event being rather cold and windy.
Hopefully the weather for the 40th MVT anniversary being planned for Mt Edgcumbe this year will be the same as last year, warm
and sunny and with the additional activities and entertainment, set in such magnificent grounds will be an event not to miss.
