June 2009
May 23rd - 25th was The Launceston Steam Rally this year held at a new venue, Five Lanes near Altarnun on a much bigger site. The MVT were invited
to provide a military display with as many vehicles as possible. Tim & Sharron set up their Medical Display and Land Rover ambulance while Ian added a
field kitchen beside his series 3 109 GS the whole lot being covered with scrim netting which made an excellent display. John camping with his Land Rover
90 GS which having served with RAMC Medical Corps in Germany, the Gulf War and in Bosnia added to the overall effect. Seven other vehicles added to
the display during the weekend, including three light weights owned by Tim, Vyvan and George, Steve with an Armored personal carrier also Pete with the
Dodge, Malcolm and Colin – jeeps while Tim displayed 1939 16H Norton and Graham displayed his 1940 M20 BSA motorcycle. Colin's jeep was
recovered from an indian reservation and features elsewhere is this Windscreen. The date of the Launceston Rally clashed with the English Heritage event
held at Pendennis Castle, Falmouth where the Battle Group were on display along with MVT war time vehicles. Bill and Paula set up a Naafi to provide
refreshment for the Battle Group and members. It is hoped that this venue will become a regular MVT event in the future.
D-Day 6th June was remembered by a road run organised by Roger and Lawson down to Smugglers Cottage, a troop embarkation point on the banks of
the river Fal, Roseland Peninsula. During the Second World War the cottage was requisitioned by the government as the Area headquarters for the
Normandy Invasion. The beach, slipway and road were built especially for the occasion. General Eisenhower came to the cottage to visit the thousands of
American troops who left Tolverne hard in LST's heading for Omaha Beach on the Normandy coast. George Brinckley & Dan, Frank Volante, Roger
Lanbshead, Richard Hollingworth, came on the road run with their jeeps, Brian Guest with a 101 GS, Ken Spurr with the Chevy and Lawson Kent with his
LWT Land Rover. Meeting up in the wet weather at Playing Place then across the King Harry Ferry and on to Tolverne to explore the site, members
received a warm welcome from the Smugglers Cottage where pasties were enjoyed by all.
June 14 the D-Day Veterans Parade was held in Bodmin. On parade with the veterans were many Cornwall RBL standards as well as contingents of the
cadet forces. The MVT were requested to provide transport from the parade ground to the church and back again for the less able body members of the
veterans. Bill – Bedford MWD, Ian – Landrover 109 and Tim, George, Vyvyan – LWT Land Rovers providing the necessary support.
The Cornish Tractor Club held its rally on the 20th - 21st June, the MVT were invited to provide a display of military vehicles, a substantial camping area
with all facilities were made available. During the weekend six vehicles took part, George Brinkly with his Jeep, Allan with the Bedford MWD, Kieth Green
Goddess fire engine and Lawson, Vyvyan, George with LWT Land Rovers. This is an excellent venue and could become a good event if better supported.
On the 27th June a Veterans Awareness Day was held in the grounds of Davidstow Cornwall at War Museum. On parade were eight standards of the
Royal British Legion inspected by LT CDR Joe Mills (Fleet Air Arm pilot 1941 – 1949) who also formally opened the new Royal Naval Air Service
building. The CMVT attended with military vehicles, some camping, the Davidstow weather being warm and pleasant for the event. A naafi set up in a large
marque manned by Paula kept a steady supply of bacon butties and cream teas for all, the marque also housed a second cinema showing military training
films which were enjoyed by MVT members and the many veterans alike.

The Moorland road run on the 19th April proved to be very popular again this year with a dozen vehicles taking to the single track roads starting at Golitha
Falls, a tour around Colliford Lake and on to open moors with a stop at Bradford, a small hamlet with a picturesque river enhanced by the warm and sunny
weather. Lunch was once again at St Breward Inn next to the Church the highest in Cornwall where thirty of us descended on the restaurant. The run
continued on to Davidstow Cornwall at War Museum where Steve & Sheila made us welcome.

Saturday 12th June saw a contingent of MVT vehicles arrive in convoy at Trebah Gardens, for the annual Airborne Forces Day. The
beach at Trebah was a departure point for the 29th Airborne Division on D-Day, and the owner of Trebah, Major Tony Hibbert, is
a veteran of the Parachute Regiment who was at the Battle of Arnhem. Nine vehicles, mostly WW2 Jeeps, ferried the veterans down
the steep hill to take part in the service and wreath laying ceremony, then lined up along the beach while a helicopter from RNAS
Culdrose laid a wreath in the sea, before transporting the veterans back up the hill. Sharon’s Russian Gaz Jeep had its first Cornwall
MVT outing, and was able to provide transport for local Russian celebrity, Vera Kotlier, a veteran of Stalingrad. As usual, it was a
day of glorious sunshine, but, disappointingly, was not as well attended by veterans and public as in previous years.
